Mod Chip or Bust

Check this people…today we’re going to go into a little technology lesson Palmer style with the introduction to (insert those mighty sounding trumpets right about…NOW!)

Mod Chips.

Whoa whoa whoa buddy…don’t we have Wikipedia for all this stuff?

This is true. For the real scoop on things and not just the way things are observed by yours truly, log onto wikipedia.org for the real deal.

Anyhow, let’s give you a little background on some forces that played into my ordering a mod chip.

  • My DVD player is ancient and so if I watched a burned DVD (such as a kickass Smashing Pumpkins concert), it’s all choppy.
  • I have media galore – music, vids, you name it.
  • Mike has media galore also.
  • Video games are cool.
  • NINTENDO video games are cooler.
  • I had to sell all my old Nintendo games when I was kid to purchase the Super NES. My parents didn’t understand the concept of owning TWO video game systems at the same time. Oh my, if they only saw Benoit’s place.

To solve all these problems, I looked at my XBox which is sitting there and decided not to sell it, but to overhaul it with semi-legal (what?) mod chips. Pop one of these puppies into your XBox and you can do whatever you want with your XBox. For example:

  • I can use it as a DVD player and it will surely be better than my existing one. No more choppy video.
  • It can act as a storage for all my digital media…if I want to check out my pictures on my digital camera, voila, it’s there. How about my music? Voila, it’s there also.
  • I can have emulators (basically, programs that emulate the functions of an actual gaming system such as the NES) which can play all the games I ever wanted.

Voila! Presto! I’m done. I think it will be cool.

I’ve never heard of a mod-chip bust but who knows you are living in the suburbs now. LOL that would make for such a funny episode of COPS where they bust into your home because you have a mod chip on your xbox.

That would be so funny. Ryan sitting there in his pyjama’s playing NES games on his xbox. The cops bust in…

Cop: “FREEEEEZE! Drop the controller and put your hands in the air MOTHER ****ER!!”

Ryan: “I swear! When I said that ‘I don’t use condoms’, I meant it as a joke!”

Cop: “Shut it Palmer. Or should I say, ‘Darth Moose’, your xboxlive alias name. We’ve been tracking you for months. You are going down.”

Cops proceed to beat Palmer with nightsticks…

Ryan: “OK, you got me! Just don’t break my thumbs! I need those for my Super Mario Bros. 2 tournament in Las Vegas, coming this March!”

Modding your xbox is legal.
It is your hardware, you bought it, you own it, you can break it with a sledge hammer, or build it into whatever you like. Change the insides, put it in a cool R2D2 case, whatever.

The only thing that is not legal is the xbox bios’ needed to boot the xbox. Because in order to create these bios’ the developer needed to backwards compile the existing xbox bios, which infringes into the intelectual properly relm.

Oh, of course it is also illegal to pirate things (games for instance), but Palmer isn’t doing that. He is using it to play mp3’s pictures, and DVD’s.

I say Mod I Ryan. Mame plus a couple of emulators and you shall be set for gaming needs for a long long time.

Matt: Humm… that’s a toughy. Lemme see:

Odyssey
Atari 2600
Coleco
Intellevision
Vectrex

PS2
Xbox
Gamecube
the beloved Portable Atari Phoenix
Gameboy Advance

plus the arcade Cabinet…

Artoo remembers why he installed that alarm system 2 years ago. 🙂

actually, I might be able to silence you with tomorrow’s blog post. just you wait.

tune in to super_ap tomorrow morning to check it out.

[wicked – i love free advertising.]

James – Antici…. pation, you should post that puppy now.

Benoit – You should host a movie night or a look in awe at my gaming cabinet night, that sounds cooool,

I read a very cool article on slashdot, where someone made an ultimate Nintendo cabinet.

Unfortunately, they pulled all the pictures, and I can’t find them on google.
Check it out.

I’m all for it.

A while back some of us did a retro gaming evening. Was fun.

A couple of beers, then a Combat head to head tourney! Fun results.

Let me think about this a bit and i’ll set something up. Heck, there are 3 TVs in the house too… could have a cool set-up in the living room. Atari, Coloco and an SNES going in the same room – could get crazy!

to be continued…

I might be willing to bring my projector, if you have a white (or light) colored wall to project on.

Might as well have the game cube going as well (mario kart yay)
