  • Sorry, the engagement is off.

The Scene: I enter the house and Mike says “Man, I heard some crazy news from back home about you. People are saying you are engaged!”

    Wha?

Dana calls Mike asking if I’m engaged. Turns out Dana saw Jen in town and she said I was engaged. Jen said she heard from her mom. Jen’s mom works at the optometrist that my mom goes to.

Boom. Somehow Mom has been saying I am engaged.

    I decide to phone her.

After much laughter we realize that either Jen’s mom, or Jen TOTALLY mixed up the fact that I have a girlfriend.

MEN, heed my warning! Don’t even say you have a girlfriend! People may think you’re engaged!

The funniest part of this story is when Mom says “Congrats on your engagement!” over the phone and I hear Dad in the background saying “What? Ryan’s engaged?”. HA!

  • Review: Turkish Star Wars

“Don’t watch this alone…or sober!” – Warning Label on the Copy at Suspect Video – Queen Street West, Toronto.

I hadn’t seen the warning label before watching this on Friday night, but luckily, with Carrie, Vero and I arriving in Toronto, we were definitely not alone, and definitely not sober while watching this.

What can I say about Turkish Star Wars? If all Turkish films are like this, I’m moving there. The blatant rip-offs of Star Wars special effects, as well as the super-cheese martial arts moves (how the heck does he jump into the air like that? Oh yes…a trampoline!), and characters who have costumes which appear like something out of a bad Hallowe’en party; add to the amazing film which is known in the Western World as Turkish Star Wars.

I was thinking that there would be Star Wars references (read: rip-offs) throughout the entire film. It starts out with footage of all the space battles from Star Wars (aka, the X-Wings fighting the Death Star) for about 10 minutes and then…that’s it. The rest of the movie deals with the two pilots who have crash landed on a planet which somehow looks like Turkey. I’m only guessing at this because I’ve never been to Turkey. But it had deserts. I think Turkey has deserts.

Much hilarity ensues and we had some great laughs at this movie. I would also like to point out that the guy in the movie must be pretty popular because we were watching Lost and Found: Volume 7 the next day and saw some clips of him kicking ass Turkish style in it.

  • Toronto Trip!

This weekend starts off what is more commonly known as the Month of Partying.

Ottawa is home to Winterlude which usually has visitors every weekend…I don’t mind at all, but I always remember by the end of the month I do enjoy a nice relaxing weekend!

We are starting February off with a bang with Carrie, Vero and I heading to Toronto this weekend for Katie’s birthday and the return of Crystal from Bermuda. It will be good times and I predict a viewing of Turkish Star Wars will occur. Have no fear Ottawaites! We will have our own Turkish Star Wars night!

Thought of the Day (taken from my Literature Class): The greatest known paradox is when someone says this phrase: “I never lie.”

  • New Bond Sucks

Boy, Daniel Craig looks like a sad, sad man who is supposed to fill in James Bond’s shoes.

May I go out on a limb and say that the new Bond film will suck as much as when Timothy Dalton came in and make Bond all ‘rogue’?

Come on. No gadgets, no Q (or R…)…back to the basics Bond.

You know what? Prequels are cool and all, but not when it involves Bond being nothing like we are used to.

I read Casino Royale and it turned me off of Bond actually because it was nothing like the Bond we know and love. Supposedly he becomes this man appears AFTER Casino Royale.

No Welcomes to you Mr. Bond.

  • Review: James Bond – The Legacy

I forgot to give you guys a review of this book I finally finished.

Through time, I hope to give you reviews on every type of media which enters my life so that you (the consumer) may be well informed.

Backtrack six months ago – I was on a James Bond kick and discovered this great book via Amazon at a super low price of…I can’t remember. It was really low. Something like $20. By the way…shop on the used section of Amazon for great deals. Carrie introduced me to this way of reading.

Anyhow, so this James Bond book covers EVERYTHING. Movie production, actors involved, writers, business behind the movies, the books being written, the legal woes, the political climate at the time of the movies, what other movies were big, the spy genre, big photos, stats….you name it, they got it.

I seriously did not find anything missing from this book. They even included the pseudo-Bond film Never Say Never Again which is usually missing from other compendiums.

It’s a thick read. 320 Pages. It’s huge so I couldn’t bring it on the bus with me. So it’s was one of the ‘before I go to sleep’ books.

If you’re a fan of Bond and are interested in everything about him and his world, I recommend this book. I would even go as far as saying it’s worth the $75 price tag. It leads all the way up to the production of Die Another Day.

In other Bond news, I’ve heard that they are redoing all the Bond DVDs for better picture and audio quality. Hold off on your purchases!

  • Review: Smallville Season 3

    Hey hey hey!

    Another season of Smallville done!

I almost forgot to review it for my faithful readers.

I would to first start off by saying that I’ve brought Mike into the fold and he is addicted to the point where he is on Episode 16 of Season 4 while I am on Episode 4.

What can I say? What should I say? I know there are people out there that hate spoilers (such as myself) so I won’t go into that terrain.

What did I like about this season? Got a little darker…WAY darker in a few spots with the Luthors…less and less non-mythology episodes, more and more interesting plotlines.

    What didn’t I like?
Well…I find the formula was wearing thin a little. Lana and Clark – they are like Dawson and Joey. On again, off again, blah blah blah. Is that what makes us love these shows? Because we are always wondering if they will work it out? Let’s be honest – In Superman III, we know that they never really hit it off after school. But, at the same time, Smallville is re-writing the history of Superman in some spots, so they can change on a moment’s notice.

Season 3: Final Verdict – Pretty killer episodes mythology wise. Best I’ve seen yet. The other filler episodes…meh.

Sneak Peek at Season 4: All I can say is that I’ve seen 4 episodes already and the series has new blood in it. I’m glad. It’s not old anymore. By the way, interesting developments with a certain someone with the initials LL. I am laughing at this because Eric was mentioning there is a fascination with the initials LL throughout the series…Lex Luthor, Lionel Luthor, Lana Lang…etc. I figured it may be because Superman’s real name is Kal-El.

  • Check out this Deal!

Go read Amin’s blog entry here.

His friend in Ottawa is selling off a SLEW of DVDs for killer, killer, wholesale prices. Sounds like he went out of business unfortunately.

I managed to pick up The Beatles Anthology (reg $70), Varsity Blues (hello whipped cream bikini!) and Spinal Tap for $50.

You can’t go wrong. I’m pumped to check out The Beatles Anthology…was a mini-series created by the remaining Beatles back in the 90s. I also received the companion book version of the mini-series from Vero at Christmas. I’m Beatled out!

People have been asking how I got a dent in my car. I have no idea. It’s on the underside of the bumper, so all I can think of it the car hit a curb or a snowbank…

    —-
Unbeknownst to some people, the roomie Mike just started his new job (for life!) at Foreign Affairs Canada today. Congrats!

    —-
I am hooked on Season 4 of Smallville. I believe Mike is hooked on it also seeing that he’s watched 16 hours of it in the past two days. Man, it would be cool to be retired. Wanna know what my ideal retirement would be, after I do all the travelling I want? Work at a comic shop and watch TV series all day long. End of story. And tend to my vineyards.

  • Turns Out I’m Not Insane

    Turns out I’m not insane.

Once again, my clock went off at 6:12 instead of 6:25.

I changed it to the right time, went for a shower, and the clock was advanced in time.

Must be something loose in the clock.

Normally I would just beat it against the wall and see if that fixes anything. But I’m making some coin now…I’m sure I can afford a new alarm clock. Plus, I could always put this clock in the spare room. So what if my guests get to wake up 13 minutes earlier?

    —-

Last night I did my Comm Research test which confirmed that I need to take better notes. Either that, or the prof is insane. I then spent a few hours with Vero which was excellent.

Anyone out there have a heat gun I can borrow? I have a dent in my bumper and I’ve heard that if you heat the thing up, you can just push it back out, since it’s plastic.

  • Am I Going Insane?

Last night I walk away from my computer.

    It’s 10:59.

I walk into my bedroom. The alarm clock reads 11:19.

    I check my wristwatch – it’s 11:00.

Clearly, my alarm clock is messed up. This is the SECOND time this week where the time is messed up. I have no idea why.

I change the clock time. I set my alarm for 6:25.

I wake up at 6:25, do the usual stuff and then when I reach for my cell phone and watch, I discover that the time is…6:25.

As in, I just spent fifteen minutes in the shower, and it is now only the time where I woke up.

    What the heck?

I believe I am going insane… I had a migraine headache the other week and ever since then, weird, silly things have been happening like the inability to type a sentence, or my clock times changing randomly.

In terms of the clock time changing last night, logic would dictate that it really was 11:19 when I went to bed and both my computer and wristwatch were off…but that doesn’t really make any sense.

So…I’m going insane I think. Or my alarm clock has a glitch.

Speaking about bettering oneself, I’m finally going to go to a doctor to get a physical. I’ve never been to a doctor since I was a kid, and I met a Doctor while in Europe who was saying how I should think about getting checked out before I’m 30.

I’m not worried about something, but it’s good to go to a doctor to get checked out just in case they can prevent something.

So, word of advice for the day – Go see a doctor! They are there to help. Contrary to popular belief, they are still accepting new patients. At least the one I found is.

  • (random) + Review of The Jeff Healey Band at Lonestar Texas Grill

    • I’ve been trying to upload another Morning Show file to ihud. Ain’t working. Will have to try from another computer. I love technology, but not as much as you and me.
    • Weekend was a bust – read all my books and studied. Do I feel smarter? No. Do I feel scared for the test? Heck yeah. The Prof doesn’t use class notes…he wings it. Maybe he’s a super-genius who remembers things. That’s right…I’m going to expose the University for what it really is. A breeding ground for higher level intelligence. Wait a second. That’s what University is all about anyhow.
    • Still chugging away at organizing the slew of MP3s that Tobias passed onto me when I was in Paris. Man, there’s a lot of stuff there.
    • Starting to learn a new song with Mike – Landing in London by 3 Doors Down. A decent tune. Although I think Mike and I realizing that the way to rock is not to learn another ballad. Ha!

I am amending this entry because I forgot the coolest event of the weekend happened on Friday when Joe, Trish, Mike and I went to see the Jeff Healey Band at Lonestar!

Had some dinner beforehand which was delic and then headed on upstairs to see the opening act Roadhouse who were decent at amping up the crowd.

Lonestar is a strange venue to see a band…the stage is at the same level as the dance floor (well, half of it at least) so when it came to the band coming on stage, I must admit it wasn’t the greatest experience because with a man who sits down to play, only the first row of people can see him! 3/4 of the way through the set we had a chance to push our way up to the front and catch the awe-inspiring playing of Mr. Healey. What can I say? I don’t think anyone in the world plays guitar the way he does…and he’s no hack. He’s an amazing guitarist. The night was filled with a bunch of blues tunes and they even brought on a girl from the Ottawa area to sing a few tunes. Trish thought that her voice was good, but she was moving her body too sexy for that young of a girl and should be punished. Here’s my word to Trish – when you rock, you gotta move.

My only gripe about the night is when these crazy cougars in the front row were reaching out to touch Jeff Healey’s hands while he was setting up to play. He even pulled away at one point and made a comment about it. Alright…I don’t see a big deal about touching someone’s hand…but then during a song one lady rubbed his leg while he was playing! That’s just rude. He’s a man, not an object for you to bewilder. Just because the man is blind doesn’t mean that you have to touch him like that. Did anyone rub the other band members legs? No. Why not? If she were to answer, she would probably say something like “Because they’re not special.”

Anyhow…I was hoping to see her later on so I could rub her leg and see how she liked it. 😉 Moron.

All in all…2 thumbs up for performance, no thumbs up for stage setup. We were saying how when we hit up Toronto next time, we should stop into his bar seeing him play. I’m sure they have a better setup.
